Babies can’t tell us they’re too hot — they just get cranky, sweaty and restless. Since little ones overheat faster than adults, keeping them cool and hydrated through an Indian summer takes a little planning. Here’s how.
Keep them hydrated the right way
- Under 6 months: breast milk or formula only — offer feeds more frequently. No water needed.
- 6 months+: continue regular feeds and offer small sips of cooled boiled water and water-rich foods.
- Watch for dehydration: fewer wet diapers, dry lips, or unusual sleepiness — see a doctor if you notice these.
Dress and sleep cool
Light, loose cotton in the day and at night. Keep the room around 24–26°C with a fan or AC on low — never pointing directly at the baby. Skip heavy blankets; a thin cotton sheet is enough.
Freshen up through the day
A quick wipe-down cools an overheated, sticky baby instantly. Keep 99% pure water wipes handy for the neck, hands and face — alcohol-free and fragrance-free, so they refresh without irritating. Change breathable diapers often to avoid heat building up in the nappy area.
Avoid the peak heat
Stay indoors between 10am and 4pm. If you must step out, use a light cotton cover for shade, keep travel short, and never leave your baby in a parked car — not even for a minute.
